Shimulinda community school was struggling to provide a strong foundation for its youngest learners. With limited teaching resources, untrained early childhood educators and low parental involvement, many children were entering grade 1 without basic literacy or social emotional skills. Teachers noted that many learners were unable to follow instructions, hold a pencil correctly or socialize effectively with peers.

In 2022 Shimulinda community school was selected to participate in the school readiness initiative. The program introduced structured play-based learning, providing learning and teaching materials and conducted comprehensive teacher training sessions. Caregivers and parents were engaged through community sensitization and parental sessions that emphasized the importance of early learning.

After two years, over 75% of learners demonstrated significant improvement in communication, cognitive development and self-care skills and the number of ECE learners has from increased.

Teachers once overwhelmed and unsure of how to engage young learners, now confidently use age appropriate, child centred methods. One teacher, Mr. Tembo shared. “Before SRI, I didn’t know how to manage an early childhood class. Now, I see every child’s potential. They are more confident and so am I.”

Parental participation increased. Parents have begun to contribute locally made learning aids and attending school activities. The school also reported higher retention rate due to the community’s growing trust in the early learning program.

Shimulinda community schools’ transformation shows how the school readiness initiative can create a ripple effect empowering teachers, improving learner outcomes and building stronger connections between schools and their communities. The success of Shimulinda has inspired neighboring schools to advocate for similar programs in their communities.

Before ZOCS introduced the School Readiness Initiative Project intervention at the school, ECE learners used to learn from a dilapidated grass thatched structure. The idea of a play-park was not in the minds of the community at that time. The school had few learns transitioning to the next grade, this was as a result of drop out, poverty and lack of parental involvement at school level. The school total enrollment was at 58 only 12 ECE learners. The school had one volunteer teacher, who was paid by the community.

SRI introduced the idea of a playpark and school feeding, which were not in the minds of the community at that time. The concept of the playpark has motivated learners to come to school and stay longer hours playing, children even visit the school premises on the weekend just to come and play. The enrollment and transition have increased, the school total enrollment is currently at 156 compared to 58 before. The ECE enrollment is now at 31. There is less drop out and strengthened parental involvement at school level.

The arrival of Zambia Open Community Schools (ZOCS) in Chikankata District has not only transformed Early Childhood Education (ECE) but also created an irresistible learning environment that has become a magnet for young learners.

Prior to ZOCS’ involvement, the school grappled with numerous challenges, including inadequate infrastructure and lack of resources to make learning engaging for the youngest pupils.

ZOCS tackled these issues head-on with a holistic approach. ZOCS began with constructing an ECE classrooms and making it a child-friendly space that has fostered curiosity and creativity.

The play park has had a profound impact on the school. It serves as both a learning and recreational space, allowing children to develop critical motor, social, and cognitive skills through structured play. Moreover, it has become a powerful attraction, drawing children from their homes to school in unprecedented numbers.

Coupled with these physical transformations, ZOCS empowered teachers with modern training (Early Learning Kiosk) that emphasized interactive, play-based teaching methods ensuring that learning is both enjoyable and impactful.

The results have been nothing short of remarkable. Enrollment at buchebuche Community School has surged, with the play park acting as a pulling magnet for learners who now view school as a place of fun, exploration, and growth. Attendance rates have stabilized, and children are more enthusiastic about their education.

This success story extends beyond the school grounds. The play park and ZOCS' other initiatives have fostered a sense of pride and ownership within the community. Parents and local leaders have become active stakeholders, contributing their time and resources to sustain and build upon the progress made.

We at Buchebuche Community School, extend our heartfelt gratitude to ZOCS for their unwavering commitment to transforming education. The play park and their broader interventions have given our children a reason to dream, to learn, and to excel a legacy that will resonate for generations.
