Introduction

We are reaching more than 40, 000 OVC with basic education in Zambia

Resource Centre

The plight of children in Zambia moves ZOCS to try and make a difference in the lives of OVC  especially girls and children with special education needs. It is a fact that girls are usually  more vulnerable than boys because they are the first to drop out of school as they are forced to look after sick parents and they may be plucked out of school to be married off at an early age.

Our educational, psycho-social, nutritional and material support  reaches to over 40, 000 children, especially girls and the disabled children in Lusaka, Eastern, Southern, Central and Western Provinces of Zambia through community schools . Due to this support children are becoming increasingly more hopeful of a brighter future.

Without any major interventions over 250, 000 children in Zambia are likely to grow up without any formal education. ZOCS relies on the support of various stakeholders to be able to fulfil the rights of over 40, 000 vulnerable children in Zambia.

We strive to provide care and support to orphans and vulnerable children that we work with in community schools.

Education

Nearly ¼ million children in Zambia are out of school

Girl Child Responsibility

The educational right of these children is being taken away. ZOCS believes that every child must be in school. Poor children, especially girls and the disabled children must also enjoy quality education just like any other child in Zambia. Entry into school is important for these children but ZOCS also seeks to provide quality education to those who would otherwise have no hope of an education.

We believe that cultural activities contribute to providing a quality basic education to children. We therefore assist community schools to incorporate culture and the arts in education to OVC.

The arts play a major role in the development and well being of the child. Children are encouraged to participate in the arts which include; drama, music, visual arts, dance and poetry.

Community Development

ZOCS helps communities to be self sufficient

Micro-Finance

ZOCS supports communities and families of OVC including grandmothers who are responsible for their care through Income Generating Activities.

Income Generating Activities such as vegetable growing help to improve the nutrition of the OVC as well as the whole community. Parent Community School Committees can also raise income by selling their produce to the community which helps them to improve school sustainability.

Through community participation schools are able to continue operating helping hundreds of children to remain in school.

ZOCS' other projects include entrepreneurship training, school management and fundraising courses, peer education trainings in HIV/AIDS prevention and psycho-social support.

Through its Community Development programme, ZOCS encourages communuties to participate in the construction of their own schools thereby enhancing a sense of ownership of the schools.
