Zambia Open Community Schools (ZOCS) is a non-profit making and non partisan NGO first registered in Zambia in 1992, as a special initiative by communities to address the rights of orphans and vulnerable children (OVC), to quality education.

The Organization provides free basic education to orphans and vulnerable children (OVC), most dispossessed children, particularly girls. The twin pillars on which ZOCS builds its approaches are those of enhanced educational opportunities for children (through Human Rights approach to programming, which entitles every child the right to education), and increased community capacity to provide such opportunities. ZOCS is unwavering in keeping these two aspects at the fore; more and better education for more children and community dedication to the provision of such education. The advent of poverty and HIV/AIDS on children required a quick response to cover Lusaka, Kafue and Kabwe districts, with a focus on OVC aged between 8-18 years (and special needs children below 6 years) with a stated preference for girls, in promotion of inclusive education and early childhood care, education and development (ECCED). ZOCS executes its work through the following strategies: capacity building, service delivery, community empowerment, and monitoring and evaluation.

Vision

ZOCS envisages itself being the trendsetter in the provision of quality basic education and life skills in Zambia to most needy children –orphans and vulnerable children (OVC), especially girls through sustainable organizational teacher and community empowerment. Its vision is simply to see that every OVC, especially girl child, atleast completes compulsory basic education and proceeds to higher level grades.

Mission

School Feeding IIZOCS exists to enable some of Zambia’s most needy children – orphans and vulnerable children (OVC), especially girls –access to quality education through increased enrolment and retention opportunities, teacher training, advocacy and micro-finance support to families. This will enable OVC to acquire the knowledge and skills they need (now and later) to develop to their full potential, hence giving them hope for the future.
